How to Align Your Skills with the C-Suite

Because Not All Execs Are Built the Same

Not every EA thrives with every Exec, and that’s a good thing. The magic happens when your natural strengths meet the right leadership style. Think of today's newsletter as your mini matchmaker for the C-suite: what works best for you and what works for your Exec...

If you’re a Vision Translator → You’ll thrive with a Founder

You shine when the brief is, “I’ve got a wild idea…” and the next line is silence. Founders move fast and pivot often, but your calm structure keeps everything moving. You love shaping vision into tangible steps and giving big ideas a clear runway.

If you’re a Strategic Connector → You’ll thrive with a CEO

You naturally link details to the big picture. CEOs value EAs who understand priorities, anticipate needs, and keep them focused on what really matters. You protect their time, simplify decisions, and make communication look effortless.

If you’re a Systems Optimizer → You’ll thrive with a COO

You love a good process and believe everything can run a little smoother. COOs rely on EAs who think in workflows, track follow-through, and make sure execution stays tight. You bring order to moving parts and keep the engine running.

If you’re a Detail Guardian → You’ll thrive with a CFO

You’re the person who spots the typo, the missing attachment, or the unbalanced spreadsheet, before anyone else does. CFOs value accuracy, trust, and data-driven decision-making. You bring structure, calm, and total reliability.

In this article, we’ll explore what different types of Executives value most and how we, as EAs, can align our skills and mindset to support them effectively. You’ll see how your approach might shift depending on whether your Executive is focused on strategy, people, innovation, or finance, and how to bring out the best in each partnership.

To excel in this role, you need to align your thinking with the Executives you support.

By understanding your Executive’s goals, vision, preferred communication styles, and natural behavior, you can provide insightful and impactful support. Aligning your thinking in the Executive Assistant role is a critical skill to master.

Goal-Setting Challenge

This week, your challenge is to map your skills to your ideal C-suite match.

Step 1: List your strengths
Write down your top 5 EA skills - the things you’re known for. Maybe it’s project management, communication, tech confidence, or emotional intelligence.

Step 2: Match them to the C-suite
Look at which Executive style your skills complement most — Founder, CEO, COO, CFO, or CPO. (For example: if you love turning chaos into structure, you’ll thrive with a Founder. If you’re all about precision and process, hello, CFO.)

Step 3: Spot your growth gap
If you’re aiming to work with a different type of leader, or move closer to the C-suite yourself, note one skill that needs leveling up. Maybe it’s strategic thinking, data confidence, or influencing senior stakeholders.

Step 4: Take one action this week
Choose a small, visible step to develop that skill. For example:

  • Join a strategic meeting and summarise key decisions.
  • Automate a recurring task.
  • Draft a clearer business case for your next project.
  • Ask your exec for feedback on your communication style.

The more intentional you are about matching your skills to the leadership style you support (or want to support), the faster you’ll grow your impact and your influence.
