If The Bro-Leadership Vibes Are Back

The Culture Shift You’re Probably Feeling First

If you’ve noticed the workplace getting a little louder, faster, and strangely obsessed with “high performance” lately, you’re not imagining it. The bro-leadership era has made a comeback, and your Exec might well be leaning into this slightly less empathetic shift in culture. Suddenly, everything is urgent. Tone is sharper. Decisions are quicker but not always better. And of course, it’s EAs who feel the shift first, because we’re the ones navigating the change while your Exec experiments with their new personality. So this week, we’re talking about how to stay sane, steady, and in control when the culture around you starts cosplaying as a tech founder. Here are a few pointers:

  • When your Exec is moving quickly, start with the point they actually need. Once you have their attention, you can add the detail that keeps things on track. It helps them make decisions without losing the nuance.
  • If something needs their input, bring two workable choices and a recommendation. This keeps the conversation focused and helps them feel supported rather than slowed down.
  • You don’t need to mirror a sharper or more urgent communication style. A calm, confident tone often resets the energy in the conversation without making it a Thing.
  • When speed is more important than quality, bring it back to what’s real. A quick “Here’s what this impacts” or “Here’s the timeline that will actually work” gives your Exec something concrete and realistic.
  • Even if everything else is moving fast, one short scheduled touchpoint each week helps you guide the conversation, align expectations, and catch issues before they spill into the rest of your workload.

In the last few years, we’ve seen a clear shift in the C-suite. A growing number of executives are leaning into harder, faster, more dominant leadership styles. Many Executive Assistants are seeing Alpha Leadership Styles surface more often in the C-suite as the culture around us shifts.

Managing up is one of the most impactful ways we add value. Managing Up as an EA means creating a two-way, high-trust partnership with your Executive. It’s understanding what they need, sometimes before they do, and setting up systems that support their success and your own.

Comet

Comet is Perplexity’s new AI-powered browser that brings search, research, and browsing into one place. Instead of jumping between tabs, tools, and windows, Comet lets you ask questions, pull in sources, and summarise information as you work. For EAs, it cuts down the time spent gathering background info for your Executive, preparing briefs, or double-checking details. Everything happens in the same browser, so the research process feels faster and more organized without needing extra apps or extensions.

Goal-Setting Challenge

This week, reach out to one person in your organization you don’t normally speak to and start a small connection. Nothing formal. Just a quick message, a short conversation, or a simple “I’d love to understand more about what you do.” Strong internal relationships make every part of the EA role smoother, especially when the culture around you is shifting. One connection. That’s it. It pays off.

Wednesday 19th November No: 044 The Easiest Way to Find an EA Mentor Ever thought, “I’d love a mentor, but I wouldn’t know who to ask”? This is for you. Mentoring comes up a lot in our community.
