The Easiest Way to Find an EA Mentor

Ever thought, “I’d love a mentor, but I wouldn’t know who to ask”? This is for you.

Mentoring comes up a lot in our community. Many Assistants tell me they’re the only EA in their company. Others have an EA team, but no one to guide them on the strategic side of the role. A mentor can change that. It gives you someone who understands the work, offers perspective, and helps you grow faster. You don’t need a formal programme or a big ask. Instead, look for the right person and a simple way to stay connected.

Be clear on what you want
Before approaching anyone, define what you’re hoping to learn. It could be project management, influencing skills, managing two executives, or stepping into a strategic partnership role. When you know what you want, the right mentor becomes easier to spot.

Look beyond senior leaders
Many Assistants assume their mentor needs to be ten steps ahead. Often, the best mentors are one or two steps ahead. Someone who has already solved the problems you’re facing. That could be an EA in another department, someone you met at a conference, or an Assistant you admire online.

Keep the ask small
Instead of asking “Will you be my mentor?”, try a simple invitation: “Could I book 20 minutes to ask your advice on X?” If the conversation flows, you can follow up every few months. Most mentoring relationships grow gradually rather than starting with a formal title.

Stay connected
Mentoring only works if you keep the relationship alive. After your chat, send a thank-you note. A few months later, send an update. Share what actions you took, what changed, or a new question. It doesn’t need to be frequent. Quarterly check-ins are enough. The goal is to keep the door open without adding work for them.

Make it two-way
Even if your mentor is more senior, you can still offer value. Share tools you use. Pass on event invites. Send a relevant article. Mentors appreciate assistants who take the relationship seriously and don’t treat it as a one-way street.

So grab your headphones, open your podcast app, and let’s explore the shows that will keep you learning, motivated, and connected, no matter what kind of day your Executive throws at you. If you’re looking for new ways to learn and stay connected, these podcasts for Executive Assistants are a great place to start.

Goal-Setting Challenge

This week, try one small experiment. Pick one goal you’re working on and talk it through with someone you trust. Keep it simple. Share what you’re trying to do, why it matters, and where you’re stuck. Then ask for one piece of advice. That’s it. You’re not looking for a full plan or a mentor. You’re practising the skill of letting someone in and getting a different perspective. Assistants often carry goals quietly on their own. A five-minute conversation can move things forward more than another hour staring at your to-do list.
