The EA who has their Executive’s back
Sometimes your Exec doesn’t need another briefing note or a well-crafted agenda and meeting pack. What they actually need is someone in their corner, particularly when the pressure is full-on.
Executives are expected to show up confident and decisive every day. They’re often the senior voice in the room and the person people look to when decisions need to be made. It can be a lot!
We know this is why Executives get paid the big bucks, but before a big meeting or a difficult conversation, their confidence can dip, and that is where trust in the EA–Executive relationship can really show up. Trust is built through accuracy, judgement, and follow-through, but it’s also built in the day-to-day moments, when your Executive feels supported and backed without having to ask for it.
This week’s newsletter looks at that part of the role. Being the person to offer the right kind of support to your Executive when they might need it the most.

Trust between an Executive and their EA is rarely built in big, visible moments. It grows gradually through the small, repeatable actions that happen every day. How you handle inbox decisions and follow up on meetings, or how you communicate with your Executive or colleagues when something shifts or goes wrong. These are the micro-behaviours that build Executive trust.

If you’re an Executive Assistant, you know how crucial inspiring trust in your EA work is to building a strong relationship of trust and confidence with your Executive. Without trust, your ability to efficiently support them in achieving their goals is compromised. Beyond that, a lack of trust can also undermine the company's overall success.

How EAs build trust by backing their Executives in the moment.
- Sometimes it’s a quick check before they head into a meeting. A simple “You’re ready for this” or “You’ve got what you need” said once, at the right moment, can go a really long way.
- When the pressure starts building up, adding more information is the last thing they need. Reminding them of the key point they want to land, or the decision they’ve already made, will help them refocus and is more impactful.
- You’ll also notice moments where the stress of something is obvious, even if they are not talking about it. In those cases, it’s often enough to acknowledge that it’s a big one, bring them a coffee, or give them a quick five minutes to compose themselves. That alone can help them feel more settled and ready to get on with it.
- Giving them a bit of reassurance doesn't have to be a big thing. One well-timed check-in or a nicely worded email is all you need. And sometimes the most supportive thing you can do is say nothing at all. Being prepared, present, and on top of the details speaks for itself, especially when the pressure is on.
